Alaska 2001
Sunday September 16, 2001 The town of Juneau only has a population of 30,000 and survives largely as the state capitol of Alaska. However, a referendum 10 years ago favored moving the capitol and substantial construction has been done at Willows. The downtown era is small and compact and didn't hold Reba's interest for long. But we still had fun. We took a "bunny-trail"
whitewater rafting trip in some of the coldest water imaginable. Monday September 17, 2001 Skagway is nothing of a town with a beautiful harbor. Nevertheless, we were astonished at the railroad that was built over a century ago to carry equipment and supplies to the Yukon gold rush. Steep grades, hard rock, deep gorges, and fast running cold water provided terrible challenges to the 20 mile construction task.
Tuesday September 18, 2001 Sitka is a town of 800 blessed with a beautiful harbor and lousy weather. We had a ball going on a whale- watching expedition. We saw more than 6 whales, a raft of sea lions, and numerous seals and eagles. It was a productive and fun trip despite the overcast skies and rain.
Wednesday September 19, 2001 Sitka is another little port town. We spent little time here, making a trip to a native American village and seeing totem poles being hand carved.
Back on the boat, Michelle held her birthday party.
